EXCEEDING STANDARDS
Dorel approached the OCTO team with a challenge to set a new standard in sustainable design – design an affordable, feature-rich stroller from primarily recycled materials and make it right here in the USA.
A BETTER STROLLER
As a design team, we need to balance consumer needs with strong cost constraints and material limitations of recycled plastics. Through our systems approach, we were able to address all factors driving the end product – functional limitations of recycled materials, cost considerations due to labor, complying with rigorous safety standards for the juvenile category, and required testing throughout the design process are just a few of the factors we need to consider.
SETTING THE STANDARDS FOR MADE IN THE USA AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Dorel wanted to bring manufacturing back to their Zero-Waste facility in Columbus, Indiana. Dorel recycles 20,000 car seats a year as part of their Zero-Waste facility. Using this recycled plastic for the stroller frame served as the central part of our design.
“When I first received my Riva stroller I was happy to see the words Made in the U.S.A. Once I opened the box and realized there wasn’t hardly any setup required I was even more pleased ! […] We took it to the mall and let me tell you the ease of opening it up with one hand was awesome ! Other great features are dual cup holders.”
